Chitungwiza's Land Grab: Dormitory Town Seeks Farmland for Expansion

Chitungwiza, a residential suburb near Zimbabwe's capital Harare, is taking proactive steps to address its land scarcity for future development. According to Wycliff Mutambanengwe, the lead planner for the municipality's master plan, the town has utilized its available land resources and is now exploring opportunities to expand into surrounding areas within Manyame Rural District Council.

The growing population of Chitungwiza has contributed to the increasing demand for land. Additionally, the municipality is working to strengthen its physical planning and housing structures to ensure orderly development and prevent unauthorized land occupation.

"As part of our master plan, we are considering the inclusion of six farms across Nyatsime to accommodate future growth and development needs," Mutambanengwe shared during engagement meetings with Chitungwiza residents. Former local councillor John Matiyenga expressed support for the municipality's expansion plans, stating "We recognize the need to look beyond Chitungwiza's current boundaries to secure land for further development."

The municipality is working diligently to finalize its comprehensive master plan by the June 30 deadline set by the governement of Zimbabwe. This directive aims to empower all 92 local authorities in Zimbabwe to develop strategic plans that will curb the growth of informal settlements and foster sustainable urban development.
